Summary
This article explores how early life environments and caregiving shape human neurodevelopment from an evolutionary perspective. Human brains feature prolonged plasticity to adapt to complex, changing circumstances. Under the “Predictive Adaptive Response” model, infants use early environmental cues—like maternal sensitivity or adversity—to “best guess” and adapt to their future environment.
Adversity and low parental sensitivity can induce chronic cortisol exposure, signaling a harsh environment. Rather than simply impairing the brain, these cues alter developmental priorities, leading to trade-offs:
- Skill Priorities: Adversity may decrease cognitive flexibility but accelerate threat detection, memory for dangerous contexts, and fear learning.
- Temporal Priorities: Adversity can cause “accelerated” neurodevelopment, prompting adult-like neural connectivity patterns to emerge early for immediate survival.
Educational “mismatches” occur when a child’s environmentally adapted skills conflict with classroom expectations. To address these gaps, the Singaporean study “BE POSITIVE” tracks environmental quality, memory, and regulation in study families to observe these interactions over time. Ultimately, understanding these neurodevelopmental trajectories can guide policies and multi-layered interventions to foster better student success and educational well-being.
